Embracing Diversity: The Experience of Minority State Troopers in Maryland, 2023

As we stand here in the year 2023, we reflect on the journey we've made so far as members of the Coalition of Black Maryland State Troopers (CBMST). The path hasn't always been smooth, but it has consistently been marked by resilience, courage, and an unwavering commitment to service.

Our organization is composed of individuals who identify as racial, religious, and status minorities within the law enforcement community. Our unique experiences have not only shaped our personal narratives but also contribute significantly to the richness and effectiveness of the Maryland State Police (MSP).

Being a state trooper in Maryland, particularly as a minority, has its share of challenges. We've experienced instances of racial bias and stereotypes, and some of us have grappled with feelings of isolation and exclusion. But every challenge we've faced has only made us more steadfast in our commitment to transform the narrative.

We've seen change over the years - an evolution towards a more inclusive and equitable law enforcement environment. This transformation is the result of tireless efforts by individuals and organizations advocating for change, and the MSP's commitment to reflect the diversity of the communities it serves.

But we are under no illusion that the journey is over. We must continue to break barriers and foster an environment of inclusion where everyone, regardless of their race, religion, or status, feels seen, heard, and valued.

We believe that diversity in our ranks makes us stronger and more effective in serving our communities. The diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences that we bring to the table enhance our collective understanding, decision-making, and problem-solving abilities. We also believe that a police force that truly reflects the community it serves fosters trust and understanding between law enforcement and citizens.

At the CBMST, we are working towards equipping our members with resources and tools to navigate the unique challenges associated with being a minority in law enforcement. We are continually advocating for equitable policies and practices within the MSP.

Moreover, we strive to mentor and support the younger generation of minority state troopers, encouraging them to take pride in their identities and use their unique perspectives to better serve their communities. We aim to foster a community of inclusivity, mutual respect, and understanding within the MSP, where each trooper is recognized for their individual strengths and contributions.

As we look forward, we're hopeful. We are witnessing a gradual shift towards a more inclusive and equitable environment within law enforcement. However, there's still work to be done, and we remain committed to driving the change we want to see.

To our fellow minority troopers, we see you. We value you. And we stand with you. Together, let's continue to serve our communities with pride, integrity, and respect, and strive for a future where every state trooper, regardless of their race, religion, or status, feels valued and included.

Here's to forging ahead, building bridges, and continuing the fight for a more inclusive, equitable, and just law enforcement community.

Signed,

The Coalition of Black Maryland State Troopers
